Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A partner of the Uztekstilprom Association, the German Association of knitwear manufacturers in its quarterly publication MASCHE, published an article on the textile industry in Uzbekistan.
In particular, the article says that Uzbekistan has submitted an official application for EU GSP + benefits to developing countries. Zero tariffs make Uzbekistan much more attractive as a buyer country.
The Ministry of Investments and Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan announced the application on 12 June. Special preferences may enter into force by the end of 2020.
When importing finished textile products, 9.6 (instead of 12) percent of import duty is still levied. This puts Uzbekistan at a disadvantage compared to other supplying countries, such as Turkey or Bangladesh.
At the same time, it was noted that exports can increase sharply from Uzbekistan and even double in a short time when receiving GSP +.
In order to obtain GSP + status and the associated zero tariff, Uzbekistan has ratified 27 international agreements and started to implement them. These include the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (Convention on Biological Diversity) and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.
The publication reports that, according to the State Statistics Committee of Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan supplied textile and clothing products (without raw cotton) to Germany in the amount of 10.2 million euros in 2019.
