Uzbekistan - Hungary: new prospects for cooperation in a pandemic period

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 14 April, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov held a video conference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the investment and trade-economic spheres, the basis for which are the agreements reached in the framework of the 5th meeting of the Uzbek-Hungarian Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation - the foreign side announced its commitment to continue to work in these areas.

In this context, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and also the banking and financial sector were identified as priority areas for investment cooperation - efforts will be made to expedite the implementation of joint projects and initiatives in these areas.

Péter Szijjártó highly appreciated the ongoing work of the Government of Uzbekistan on joining the WTO, coordinating the draft of the SPRS, as well as obtaining the status of the beneficiary country of the “GSP +” system and informed about the readiness of the Hungarian Government to provide support to Uzbekistan in these initiatives through the permanent missions of Hungary in the EU structures and the WTO.

In addition, Péter Szijjártó on behalf of the Government of Hungary expressed special gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan for providing humanitarian assistance to Hungary in preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The parties agreed to hold joint video sessions at the expert level, consisting of representatives of the involved ministries and departments for the practical implementation of joint projects as the epidemiological situation in the world improves.

Following the talks, the parties also agreed to continue to develop additional measures aimed at strengthening and expanding bilateral trade and economic partnership.
