Private investment in building sustainable infrastructure in Asia discussed

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 25 March 2020, an online conference on the topic “Unlocking the potential of private investment in building sustainable infrastructure in Asia” was held.
The organizers of the scientific and practical conference were the Center for Economic Research and Reforms under the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan (CERR), the Asian Development Bank Institute and the CAREC Institute.
Leading domestic and foreign experts in the field of infrastructure financing participated in the video conference, in particular, the head of the ADB think tank Naoyuki Yoshino, the deputy director of the CAREC Institute Iskandar Abdullaev and the deputy director of the CERR Umid Abidhajaev.
Welcoming the participants of the event, the CERR Director Obid Khakimov spoke about the ongoing political and economic reforms in the country initiated by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and emphasized the important role of infrastructure projects in the current stage of the country's development.
The report of the Deputy Director of CERR Umid Abidkhajaev presented a case study on assessing the impact of infrastructure projects in Uzbekistan. In particular, the results of an empirical study devoted to quantitative estimates of the accompanying effects of the Tashguzar-Baysun-Kumkurgan railway project on the financial performance of regional enterprises are presented.
During the online conference, participants expanded their skills on modern scientific methods for assessing the effectiveness of infrastructure projects and involving private investment in building sustainable infrastructure in the Asian region. An agreement was reached on the application of empirical estimates also for projects in the field of irrigation and water management, which is very relevant in the Central Asian region.
The Asian Development Bank Institute is the think tank of the Asian Development Bank and focuses on identifying best practices and effective development strategies for Asia and the Pacific, as well as supporting ADB member countries in managing development issues.
The CAREC Institute is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006 at the 5th CAREC Ministerial Conference, which is engaged in the formation and exchange of knowledge in order to promote economic cooperation. The CAREC Institute is shared, owned and operated by eleven member countries: Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
The Center for Economic Research was transformed into the Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) under the Administration of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the relevant resolution was October 3, 2019. signed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Among the tasks of the transformed center is conducting analytical and applied research to develop deeply developed proposals for strategic areas for deepening socio-economic reforms, analyzing scenarios and effects of developed and implemented economic policy measures, etc.
