Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 13 February 2020, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan located in London headed by First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Akmal Saidov met with Vice Speaker of the House of Commons of the British Parliament Eleanor Lang, a member of the House Lords Baroness Alison Satti, representatives of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, as well as experts from British research and educational centers.
Welcoming the large-scale and rapid socio-political and socio-economic transformations in Uzbekistan, the Vice-Speaker of the House of Commons, Eleanor Lang, particularly noted the positive achievements of the country in raising the status of the parliament, strengthening its role in forming the government, ensuring the protection of human rights and freedoms.
The vice speaker emphasized that despite the centuries-old history and long-standing traditions of parliamentarism in the United Kingdom, British MPs are interested in studying and exchanging experience on the development of parliamentarism with other countries, including Uzbekistan. In this regard, interest is expressed in organizing joint events with the participation of legislators, lawyers and representatives of civil society. According to her, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Uzbekistan, a new composition of which was formed the day before, can play a significant role in this.
Highly appreciating the international initiatives of Uzbekistan in the field of strengthening international law, in particular on the adoption of the UN Convention on Youth Rights, the British side noted the importance of cooperation within the framework of international organizations, in particular the UN and its treaty bodies, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and others.
British experts expressed great interest in participating in the Samarkand forum on human rights, which will be dedicated to ensuring the rights of young people and discussing the relevant draft UN Convention developed by the Uzbek side.
