Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 11 February 2020, at the UN headquarters in New York, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Uzbekistan took part in an informal meeting of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries.
This Group consists of 32 developing UN member states, including from the CIS countries, its participants are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The main objectives of the Group are the development and promotion of the common economic interests of its member countries, the effective implementation of globally agreed tasks and action programs relating to landlocked developing countries, strengthening their position on major international economic issues within the framework of the UN, World Trade organizations and other multilateral forums.
During the current event, issues of strengthening interaction between the countries of the Group, improving their transit and transport potential and developing a reliable transit infrastructure were discussed. Participants also reviewed the implementation of the Vienna Program of Action for landlocked developing countries for the period 2014-2024, which attaches great importance to building transport and logistics ties.
In a speech by the Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Ibrahimov, the attention of the participants was focused on measures taken by the Government of our country to implement the key priorities of the Vienna Program of Action and promote regional cooperation in Central Asia. It was emphasized that in recent years a fundamentally new political atmosphere has been formed in the region, a high level of regional cooperation is observed, and trade and economic cooperation between countries is being strengthened.
Attention was drawn to the fact that at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Consultative meetings of the heads of state of Central Asia began to be held.
The meeting participants were also acquainted with the main results of the Second Consultative Meeting of Central Asian Heads of State held on 29 November 2019 in Tashkent, during which important issues such as expanding cooperation in the trade, economic, investment, transport, communication and energy sectors were discussed.
Key initiatives of the republic’s leadership on convening the Tashkent International Investment Forum, creating a regional council for transport communications, as well as holding the first meeting of the chambers of commerce and industry of the countries of the region were announced.
