Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 23 December, the Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) under the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a meeting was held with Professor Masato Hivatari, professor of Hokkaido University (Japan).
Hokkaido University is one of the 7 National Universities in Japan. The university is consistently included in 5% of the top educational institutions in Japan. The university is considered one of the most respectable among employers in Japan and around the world.
The purpose of this meeting was the exchange of experience on the development of scientific relationships between scientists of the two countries in the preparation of joint research.
Professor Masato Hivatari gave a lecture and briefly explained the essence of his research activities.
In addition to other projects, Professor Masato Hivatari has been conducting research since 2001 on the impact of the mahalla institute on the socio-economic development of Uzbekistan. In particular, he studies the role of “gap” meetings in shaping the financial savings of the population, and assesses the effect of neighborly and kinship relations (peer effect) on migration. He conducted his research on the example of 567 families from Andijan region.
As part of the lecture, the Japanese scientist presented the presentation “Traditions and the informal economy in Uzbekistan: a case study of the Gapa Institute in Andijan region”, which detailed the essence of his research on community development, network analysis, the economics of Central Asia, the transition economy, migration .
During the lecture, he also presented the results of his empirical study in Andijan region. An analysis of surveys conducted in 2003 and 2008 shows that, although neighborhood and family ties, including Gap meetings, have simplified the migration process among rural residents and increased its likelihood, by 2008 the potential impact of social relations on migration had decreased. That is, the fact that one of the relatives or neighbors went abroad to work has become less motivating for other members of the community to migrate.
According to the researcher, this may mean that the number of villagers traveling abroad on their own, and not through acquaintances, has increased.
Following the presentation, the professor answered questions from Center experts.
The parties expressed the need to establish cooperation between the University of Hokkaido and CEIID in the field of joint research projects of mutual interest, the organization of joint seminars and symposia.
