Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 11 December 2019, the first deputy of the Center for Hydrometeorological Service under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan Bahriddin Nishanov spoke at the 25th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change COP-25, which was held in Madrid (Spain) on 2-13 December.
The conference is the main international platform for discussing solutions to one of the most important problems of our time - climate change and is held under the slogan "Time to act." The event is attended by representatives of more than 190 countries, international organizations and NGOs.
In his speech, the head of the Uzbek delegation informed the participants about the progress of our country in fulfilling the commitments made under the Paris climate agreement, as well as about the transition to a green economy, and called on the international community to support the large-scale efforts led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to address the negative effects of the drying of the Aral Sea. In particular, the urgency of establishing and expanding cooperation between the Multi-Partnership Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea region and the donor community in the implementation of projects for socio-economic rehabilitation of the region affected by the environmental crisis, which was created in 2018 under the aegis of the UN, was emphasized.
In the framework of participation in the work of COP-25, the delegation of our country held a series of negotiations with international donor organizations. Thus, at meetings with representatives of the UN Green Climate Fund, the United Nations Agricultural and Food Organization (FAO), the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC), as well as the delegations of Germany and Italy, prospects for expanding project cooperation on minimizing the effects of climate change were discussed.
The parties agreed to jointly develop action plans to strengthen national capacities to reduce emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. An exchange of views took place on attracting financial, technical and advisory assistance from donor agencies to promote the green economy in Uzbekistan.
