Uzbekistan presents periodic report on implementation of UN convention in Geneva

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Within the framework of the 68th session of the UN Committee against Torture (CAT), held in Geneva, the Fifth periodic report of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the implementation of the provisions of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment was considered.
At the event, the Uzbek delegation was led by the director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov, and it included our country's permanent representative to the UN Office at Geneva, U. Lapasov, deputy general prosecutor E. Yuldashev and deputy minister of internal affairs B. Adilov, representatives of other ministries and departments of the republic.
The Committee members were informed of the significant efforts made in Uzbekistan to further democratize society, to protect and promote human rights, and to deepen market transformation.
Thus, members of the Committee emphasized that "Uzbekistan is not what it was before, as evidenced by the fact that representatives of Uzbek NGOs took part in the current session, which was previously difficult to imagine." They praised the decision of the leadership of Uzbekistan to accept two UN special rapporteurs, as well as the willingness of the Uzbek side to their return visits.
Following the results of the report, most members of the Committee called for continuing reforms in Uzbekistan in the field of ensuring the rights and freedoms of citizens. They expressed appreciation for the constructive approach of the Uzbek side, which submitted a timely substantive report and answers to the Committee's questions.
Significant efforts by Uzbekistan in reforming the judicial system were also noted, including a significant reduction in the number of prisoners.
The delegation of Uzbekistan gave detailed answers to all the questions posed, based on current legislation, law enforcement practice, statistical and other data, decisions of the UN charter and treaty bodies.
Written answers to a number of additional questions of the Committee members, as well as new legislative acts, decrees and resolutions of the President of Uzbekistan, decisions of the government of the country were also sent to the Secretariat of the session.
