Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A press conference was held in the capital on the start of vaccination against the human papillomavirus. The organizers were the Ministry of Health, the representative offices of WHO and UNICEF in Uzbekistan, the press service of the Ministry of Health reports.
The participants were specialists and experts in the field of epidemiology, gynecology, oncology, palliative care, representatives of international organizations and journalists.
As noted, cervical cancer is one of the most serious threats to women’s health. This is the fourth most common cancer in women around the world. For example, in 2018, about 570,000 new cases of this disease were reported. More than 311,000 women die of cervical cancer each year.
In Uzbekistan, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women of all ages after breast cancer and the second most common cause of death for women of childbearing age after breast cancer. According to WHO estimates, every year in Uzbekistan, 1,660 women develop cervical cancer. Thus, the burden of diseases associated with the papilloma virus is great.
In 2017, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan approved the National Plan for the Control and Prevention of Cancer, including the introduction of comprehensive screening for cervical cancer throughout the country. This plan includes primary preventative measures such as HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening, in addition to measures to improve cervical cancer treatment and palliative care.
According to the national vaccination calendar in our country, children are vaccinated against 12 manageable infections at the expense of the state, thanks to which a stable epidemiological situation remains. Now the vaccination against human papillomavirus is included in the National Immunization Program of Uzbekistan. The introduction of the HPV vaccine will help prevent cervical cancer. Routine vaccination of adolescent girls will prevent in the future annually 1,100 cases of diseases and about 600 cases of death from cervical cancer.
It is worth noting that in our country for several years preparations are underway for the introduction of an HPV vaccine in the National Vaccination Calendar. In particular, in 2010 in the republic of 8 thousand girls from 9 to 15 years old were vaccinated against HPV. For 9 years no negative changes were observed in them. It is also noteworthy that in many countries the vaccine is paid, and in Uzbekistan girls will be vaccinated at the expense of the state.
As noted at the event, WHO recommends the inclusion of the HPV vaccine in all national immunization programs. 96 countries have now included HPV vaccines in their national immunization programs, including most of Europe, such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, as well as the United States, Canada, Australia and Latin America. So, since 2006, more than 100 million people have been vaccinated worldwide.
In turn, many people care about the question: does the vaccine affect the reproductive function of girls? According to studies, it turned out that the vaccine not only protects the body from cervical cancer, but also improves the health of girls. A striking example of this was Gulirarano Rakhimjonova, who was invited to a press conference, with her three-year-old daughter. In 2010, at the age of 15, among 8,000 vaccinees, she later received the HPV vaccine.
After vaccination did not feel any negative consequences. According to her, many of the girls vaccinated then are happy parents today.
During the press conference, national and international experts presented the latest research in the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer, the experience of introducing the HPV vaccine in other countries. Journalists received detailed answers from their experts to their questions.
