Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18 September, a round table was held in the city hokimiyat dedicated to the Week of Mobility and Road Safety.
The delegation of the European Union in Uzbekistan, representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of the Interior and the UN attended the event.
Every year, 1.35 million people die from accidents in the world, and 20 to 50 million are injured. These scary figures require urgent, constant, painstaking work to save lives. Traffic accidents also bring great economic damage, so all investments in safety will pay off.
The head of the European Union delegation to Uzbekistan, Eduards Stiprais, introduced the participants to the meeting with facts about the Mobility Week. This action appeared 17 years ago, more than 50 countries joined in it, in which approximately 2,500 cities participate. Mobility (the ability to walk, walk, run, ride a bicycle) is the fourth most important condition for people's lives, before mobility in this list is housing, health education. Access to these four declared values must be unconditional, independent of wealth and place of residence. In Europe, 72% of residents live in cities, while they consume 75% of electricity and accumulate 85% of income. The development of mobility not only makes the city friendly and convenient for residents, but also reduces the burden on healthcare, reduces environmental damage, saves fuel and energy.
Dr. S. Adnan Rahman (EU Road Safety and Mobility Project Director, Managing Director of DATS Consulting) also made a presentation. He spoke in detail about measures to increase traffic safety.
How to raise the level of security? Firstly, we need statistics data, this is a problem in many countries, statistics are not collected or inaccessible, or do not reflect the necessary information. Secondly, we need an integrated approach, more than one driver is to blame for the accident. This is the common work of designers, builders, legislators, law enforcement agencies, civil society, doctors, school teachers and so on.
During the exchange of views, the head of the community of cyclists in Tashkent Iskander Akhmedov addressed representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, noting that according to the law, cyclists, as participants in the movement, are equated with transport, and bicycle parking is occupied by cars with the connivance of police officers. In response, assurances were received that the problems were known and gradually being resolved.
Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs informed those present about ongoing measures to reduce the number of accidents and improve traffic safety.
Foreign guests noted the good organization of the Mobility Week and thanked the city administration for their assistance.
