Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In the north-east of Uzbekistan, in the mountains of Chatkal, ancient cave paintings were discovered that are several tens of millennia old.
This discovery was first published on the science and education portal Science of Poland under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland.
For several years, a group of Polish scientists from Warsaw University has been conducting archaeological excavations in the Chatkala Mountains, which led the expedition to the opening of several human camps about 40 thousand years old. However, the discovery of ancient petroglyphs has become an incredibly significant event for experts.
“We received a signal from the local population that in a place close to our excavations, drawings are visible on the rocks. We decided to check, and as it turned out, the information was significant. The number of drawings there is large. Until now, they were completely unknown to scientists,” the head of the expedition, Dr. Malgozhata Kot from the Institute of Archeology of the University of Warsaw, said in the article.
The accumulation of petroglyphs is located on the slopes of the high valley of Kyzyl-Dara. They are made on huge flat rocks located at an altitude of 2500 to 3100 meters above sea level. According to Dr. Kota, this is one of the highest located places of this type with rock art in Uzbekistan. Carved cliffs extend over an area of several hundred meters.
Among the numerous drawings, you can see images of deer, mountain goats, dogs, wolves and other animals, there are drawings and ancient people.
The oldest petroglyphs can date back to the middle of the second millennium BC, because the remnants of nearby settlements date back to the time of this period.
