Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 3 September 2019, a grand opening of the branch of the National Research Nuclear University “Moscow Engineering Physics Institute” (NRNU MEPhI) was held in Tashkent.
The ceremony was attended by Abdulla Aripov, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Alexei Likhachev, Director General of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, Alisher Sultanov, Advisor to the Prime Minister, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan, representatives of senior management of the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, representatives of the Uzatom, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Rosatom State Corporation and other guests of honor.
The opening of the MEPhI branch in Tashkent is a clear confirmation of the consistent development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and Russia. Here students will be able to study on the basis of the best modern programs. This educational institution is recognized not only in Russia, but also internationally. All graduates of the branch will receive a Russian diploma recognized in Uzbekistan and abroad, and will be provided with jobs at domestic enterprises in the nuclear industry.
The Director General of Rosatom State Corporation expressed confidence that the opening of the MEPhI branch will contribute to the development of a quality training program for specialists to develop the nuclear industry in the country.
“The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is a large-scale project, the implementation of which, of course, is impossible without the development of personnel potential. Personnel training is the basis for the successful development of the nuclear industry in the country, and we are pleased that our cooperation with our Uzbek colleagues in this field is developing so successfully,” Alexey Likhachev said.
After the solemn speeches, the guests cut the symbolic ribbon, marking the opening of the first foreign branch of the university. Next, the ceremony participants examined the audience and modern laboratories of the new campus, where the country’s future nuclear scientists will study. Director General of Rosatom State Corporation Alexei Likhachev talked to the first students and wished them success in their studies. President of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan Behzod Yuldashev and Rector of NRNU MEPhI Mikhail Strikhanov gave the first students a lecture on the history of the best “nuclear” university in Russia.
The idea of opening a branch belongs to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The main activities of the new university will be the training of highly qualified engineering and technical personnel in the field of nuclear energy and thermophysics, as well as fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of nuclear physics.
Along with Uzbek specialists, a highly qualified teaching staff from Russia, with many years of teaching experience in leading universities of the Russian Federation and foreign countries, is involved in the educational process. Students will also have the opportunity to listen to lectures by international experts through distance learning, and IAEA representatives and Rosatom specialists will be among the first lecturers.
The first 100 students have already successfully passed the exams and will soon begin training on the new campus. Learning will take place on a budgetary basis.
