Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the British Council in Uzbekistan will collaborate on a project to reform the study of English at schools within the Future English project.
On August 15, 2019, Minister of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sherzod Shermatov and Director of the British Council in Uzbekistan Rachel Island signed a letter of participation on an action plan for a project aimed at further improving English teaching and learning.
The Future English project supports large scale national reforms in public education to help school graduates to improve their English to respond to the needs of local and global markets and find new digital solutions for young people to learn English and succeed in the careers. The key stages of the project include comprehensive research by UK’s leading research agencies and higher education institutions to analyse the overall public education needs and in particular the English language levels and skills of 16 year old students and their motivation, aspirations and learning preferences, the classroom practices and attitudes of their English teachers and how this is impacted by English language policy and processes in the education system. Research phase will be followed by language policy forums and policy discussions involving school leadership in Uzbekistan, neighbouring countries as well as UK ELT sector. The project will involve development of the platform to support teacher development and create communities of practice called ‘virtual teacher activity groups’ (vTAG); professional development activities will be moderated and gamified, and the platform aims to be connected to different elements of the British Council’s current digital offer such as Teaching English and Teaching for Success as well as Future Learn.
The Minister of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sherzod Shermatov noted: “The British Council in Uzbekistan is our strategic partner not only in improving English teaching and learning, but also in the whole system of public education. According to the Ministry, school graduates should be proficient in at least three languages - the state, Russian and one foreign language. Our new joint project will improve teaching of English which will open up new opportunities for our graduates. ”
Rachel Ireland, Director of British Council Uzbekistan underlined: “We are delighted to collaborate with the Ministry of Public Education to support the large scale national reforms in public education. The Future English project will help school graduates improve their English to respond to the needs of local and global markets enabling them to find new digital solutions to learn English and succeed in their careers. We are inviting leading research agencies and higher education institutions from the UK and elsewhere to support Uzbekistan in its public education priorities through research to understand the needs and propose solutions in collaboration with major stakeholders. Our aim is to provide a holistic approach followed by language policy discussions and to support teacher development, create digital platforms and resources for professional development and networking”.
