Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- For the purpose of discussing the issues of further development of the activities of public councils at government agencies, Tashkent will host, 14 August 2019, the Forum of Public Councils. Organized for the first time, the Forum will bring together more than 150 representatives of the public councils throughout the country, the media, active citizens, united to promote reforms in Uzbekistan, as well as foreign experts.
Based on the Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, government agencies and local authorities have assembled public councils contributing to the formation of a ‘bridge’ between the people and the authorities.
Considerable efforts are being undertaken to date to turn public councils into a platform for constructive dialogue on pressing issues and burning problems. One of the main tasks in this area is the capacity building for members of public councils, providing them with methodological and practical assistance, studying international experience in this area, introducing new knowledge and skills into their activities.
In this regard, Yuksalish Nationwide Movement together with the ARGO Civil Society Development Association, Kazakhstan, with the support of the United States Agency for International Development launched in Uzbekistan the Partnership for Innovation Program (P4I). The P4I Program aims to provide comprehensive support to the activities of non-governmental non-profit organizations and other civil society institutions, including the provision of grants, methodological and practical skills, and the organization of trainings.
Five pilot public councils have been selected on a competitive basis. They are assisted in increasing organizational and institutional capacity.
This July, a working group composed of experts visited the regions. During the visit, they got acquainted in detail with the activities of public councils and their members. The experts provided them with the necessary advice and recommendations.
In the future, it is planned to organize a study tour to the USA for the most active participants of the P4I Program so that they can learn the experience of city councils.
The Forum of Public Councils, organized within the framework of the Partnership for Innovation Program Uzbekistan, will serve a platform for discussing many initiatives, sharing experience and, most importantly, analyzing the work done over the past period and drawing up new plans aimed at developing the area.
The event will be attended by heads of relevant ministries and departments, representatives of embassies of foreign countries in Uzbekistan and public organizations. The Forum will present the activities of pilot public councils functioning in Uzbekistan, as well as the experience of public councils in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Following the Forum, Yuksalish Nationwide Movement will prepare a package of recommendations for improving the activities of public councils, including interaction with government agencies, activating and involving citizens in the implementation and promotion of state reforms and the priority tasks set by the country’s leadership.
