Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The United Nations Population Fund in Uzbekistan (UNFPA) together with key Government institutions, ministries, Parliament, international partners, academia, NGOs and media representatives gathered today to commemorate the World Population Day in Uzbekistan.
The event is combined with the 50th anniversary of UNFPA and devoted to the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held in Cairo in 1994. The participants of the event will mark the achievements and progress made in advancing rights and choices for all; recommit and advance completion of the ICPD Programme of Action, indispensable in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The year 2019 marks two important milestones in the field of reproductive health and rights: 50 years since UNFPA began operations, and 25 years since the landmark International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo where 179 governments, including Uzbekistan, adopted a Programme of Action, recognizing that reproductive health, women's empowerment and gender equality are the pathway to sustainable development.
The 25th anniversary of the ground breaking Conference is the focus of this year’s World Population Day celebration which suggests an opportunity for a dialogue between our key national partners, ministries, international organizations, donors, NGOs, academia, youth and media representatives not only on what has been achieved and what has changed in the areas of reproductive health and rights, gender equality, youth policy, but, most importantly, on the way forward and actions required to finish the ICPD agenda by 2030.
This dialogue will serve as a platform for generating national commitments to end preventable maternal deaths, eliminate unmet need for modern contraceptives, end gender-based violence. The commitments will be presented by the national delegation during the forthcoming Nairobi Summit on ICPD25 on 12-14 November 2019.
The Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, convened on the highest level, will bring everyone together: heads of state, ministers, parliamentarians, thought-leaders, technical experts, civil society organizations, grassroots organizations, young people, business and community leaders, faith-based organizations, international financial institutions, people with disabilities, academics and many others interested in the pursuit of reproductive health and rights.
The Summit will mobilize the political will and financial commitments we urgently need to finally and fully implement the ICPD Programme of Action.
