Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 2 July 2019, a briefing on Afghanistan of the US Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, was held at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Washington, DC. The briefing was held for ambassadors of Central Asian countries and was devoted to current US efforts and plans in Afghanistan, to discuss the course and prospects for a peaceful settlement in this country.
Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, in his speech, stated that his key task as special representative was to coordinate international efforts to prevent the Afghan territory from becoming again a haven for terrorists, reducing the military and financial burden on the United States through measures for economic recovery and ensuring the country’s self-sufficiency, launching inter-Afghan peace negotiations.
According to the information of the American diplomat, the work is simultaneously carried out in three dimensions - global, regional and intra-Afghan.
Touching upon the important role of our country in solving the Afghan problem, Ambassador Khalilzad positively responded about Uzbekistan’s readiness to provide a platform for inter-Afghan dialogue, highly appreciated Uzbekistan’s efforts in the peace process and reported on repeated visits to Tashkent after taking office.
The US Special Representative noted that the United States supports the implementation of numerous infrastructure projects in Afghanistan, aimed at substantially facilitating interregional trade and interconnection. In his conviction, achieving peace and stability in the country will become a serious impetus to the development of trade and economic relations by developing profitable transport corridors, reducing transportation time, reducing export costs and increasing the competitiveness of products, including Uzbek-made.
In conclusion, the diplomat stressed that the more Afghanistan becomes involved in economic processes and starts to benefit from it, the lower the financial burden on the US will be. “Self-sufficient Afghanistan, which facilitates the entry of goods into the world market, represents a huge benefit for all,” he said.
Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to continue the practice of holding such briefings on a regular basis.
