Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The International Scientific and Practical Conference “Water Security and Water Management for Sustainable Agriculture” was held in the capital of India.
The event, which was organized by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), was attended by experts from the member states of this organization, heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Delhi, representatives of international organizations (World Bank, ADB, FAO, etc.), ministries and departments, business, expert and academic circles of India. It was timed to the 70th anniversary of the ICID.
During the conference, the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Delhi made a detailed presentation on the theme “Water security and sustainable development in Central Asia”. The participants were provided with detailed information on integrated measures undertaken by Uzbekistan in the field of rational use of water resources, modernization of the irrigation system, as well as strengthening regional water cooperation.
Separately, the Aral issue was covered. In particular, the participants were informed about efforts at the national, regional and international levels to mitigate the negative impact of the Aral Sea crisis on the environment and livelihoods of people living in the region. Information about the active participation of Uzbekistan in the activities of IFAS was announced.
Along with this, the attention of the participants was drawn to the work currently being carried out within the framework of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral region created at the initiative of Uzbekistan.
The presentation aroused the lively interest of the conference participants. In particular, ICID General Secretary Ashvin Pandaya outlined the Organization’s readiness to provide comprehensive assistance to Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries to increase scientific, technical and expert potential in the field of water resources use.
“ICID’s activities are aimed at studying the problems of agriculture and water management. Our commission has been working closely with Uzbekistan for many years in this direction. We support the ongoing reforms in your country in the field of irrigation and agriculture, as well as active measures to mitigate the effects of the Aral crisis,” the source said.
Wasfi Hassan, Secretary General of the Afro-Asian Organization for Rural Development, welcomed the deepening of regional cooperation in water and environmental issues in Central Asia. He stressed that “Uzbekistan’s initiatives in the field of sustainable development, as well as concrete steps for their practical implementation, deserve great attention.”
