Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On Tuesday 28 May, Ms. Elke Büdenbender, the First Lady of Germany, visited a UNICEF-supported HIV day care centre at the Institute of Virology in Tashkent. Ms. Elke Büdenbender is a patroness of UNICEF Germany and supports the wellbeing of children wherever possible.
The young people introduced themselves and talked about their treatment and their activities at the day care centres. Ms. Elke Büdenbender was very interested to learn about the peer support training programme for adolescents living with HIV.
After watching a video about the centre’s thriving peer support programme, Ms. Elke Büdenbender praised their work, noting how much the young people help each other and newly diagnosed adolescents.
Ms. Elke Büdenbender was surprised to hear about the courage of Azima, age 16, who participated in a social experiment, where she reached out to public saying, ‘I am HIV positive, Hug me!’. She agreed that it is critical to fight stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV.
Ms. Elke Büdenbender talked about the progress Germany has made in accepting people living with HIV, and her personal experiences with people living with the condition in her own and other countries.
