Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- In order to participate in interfaith iftar and a round table on ensuring freedom of religion in Uzbekistan, a delegation consisting of the Director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov, Chairman of the Senate Committee arrived in Washington Oliy Majlis Alisher Kurmanov, director of the Center for Islamic Civilization, Shoazim Minovarov, and also mufti Usmonkhon Alimov is paying visit to the United States.
The visit of the Uzbek delegation was a logical continuation of the ministerial conference on the promotion of religious freedom in July last year, at which Uzbekistan was first introduced, as well as the follow-up visit to our country by Ambassador for Special Religious Freedom Sam Brownback.
During their stay in Washington, the delegation held bilateral meetings with representatives of the White House and the US Department of State.
On 21 May 2019, at a meeting with Deputy Assistant to the President of the United States Liza Curtis, large-scale political and legal reforms in Uzbekistan, including in the field of human rights, were discussed. The delegation of Uzbekistan was also received by Special Adviser to the Vice-President of the USA for South and Central Asia, Michael Katron.
The US side welcomed the implementation of deep political and socio-economic transformations in Uzbekistan over the past two years and positively assessed the progress in ensuring religious freedoms. The White House representatives expressed their readiness to work closely with the Uzbek side on all issues of the extensive agenda of bilateral cooperation.
The meeting with Ambassador Sam Brownback was focused on the implementation of the Road Map in the sphere of freedom of religion and belief, further cooperation measures aimed at excluding Uzbekistan from the so-called “watch list” - countries that are concerned about religious freedom.
The diplomat welcomed the efforts of Uzbekistan to improve national legislation, including the development of a new law on freedom of conscience and religious organizations, simplification of registration procedures and the creation of conditions for the activities of religious organizations. Representatives of the State Department highlighted the dynamics of the development of religious education and enlightenment in the country, the opening of new mosques, madrasas and research centers on theology and hadith studies.
Within the framework of the visit of the official delegation to Washington, an interfaith iftar took place, in which for the first time in the history of Uzbek-American relations the mufti of Uzbekistan took part.
The event took place in the Grand Hall named after George Schultz - US Secretary of State under the administration of Ronald Reagan. Representatives of the State Department and the US Congress, public and political figures, heads of diplomatic missions of a number of Muslim countries, leading Islamic theologians and leaders of the Muslim community, Catholic and Orthodox churches, synagogues and other denominations took part in the iftar.
Guests were greeted by the us mufti of Uzbekistan Umonkhon Alimov, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan Javlon Vahabov, Ambassador for Special Assignments in the field of religious freedom Sam Brownback.
The participants were informed about the traditions of tolerance of the Uzbek people, manifested, among other things, in the wide celebration of the holy month of Ramadan in our country, together with representatives of all religious denominations of Uzbekistan.
Nancy Lindborg, President of the Institute for Peace, spoke at the meeting. Against the background of the growing tendencies of religious nationalism in the world, repression of ethnic and religious minorities, Uzbekistan confidently positions itself as a model of a secular state in which interethnic harmony and inter-religious harmony flourish.
