Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - The Embassy of Uzbekistan in the United States, together with the heads of the embassies of Russia and several CIS countries in Washington, took part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the “Spirit of Elba” memorial plaque to commemorate the unification of allied forces against fascism, which traditionally took place on 25 April 2019 at the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington.
The “Spirit of the Elbe” memorial was opened in 1995 on the day of the 50th anniversary of the historic meeting of the Allies on the eponymous river Elbe (Germany) at the final stage of the Second World War. The text in English and Russian is engraved on the bronze plate: "This plaque is dedicated to the military community of Soviet, American and allied armed forces in the battle against tyranny during World War II and symbolizes the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe River on 25 April 1945."
The event was attended by direct participants of the famous meeting on the Elbe, American veterans, former Soviet soldiers and officers living in the United States who fought on the fronts of the Second World War, and media representatives.
In his speech, US Assistant Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale stressed that the unification of the two allied armies played a decisive role in the victory over fascism.
Participation in a ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetery is a prelude to memorable events that the Embassy plans to hold on the eve and on the days of the national holiday of 9 May - Memorial Day and honors, which is widely celebrated in Uzbekistan.
