A delegation of EU visits the Aral Sea region

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The EU delegation led by EU Special Representative for Central Asia P.Burian and Deputy General Director of the Institute for Global Green Growth (GIZR) H. Kim visited the Aral Sea district (Nukus and Muynak district).
During the visit, prospects for development of relations between Uzbekistan and the European Union, strengthening cooperation in the field of the Multiparty Trust Fund for Human Security (MPTF) were discussed.
As part of the visit to the region, the Uzbek side presented the results of the work being done to mitigate the effects of the drying up of the Aral Sea and the implementation of measures to support the activities of the ITTF. In the continuation of the visit, the delegation visited the branch of School No. 16, the Muinak Research Area of the International Innovation Center in the Aral Sea region in the SSG Tiz-Ozek, an embroidery sewing workshop, an open-air museum of the ships Z. Novitsky.
In order to attract financial and technical assistance, the guests presented priority initiatives prepared by the Interdepartmental Working Group on development and evaluation of project proposals.
The representative of the Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO), M.Ramakers, said that measures are currently being taken to transfer the initial contribution by the end of this year. DEVCO focuses on the approval of substantial assistance for the Aral region in the next EU budget for 2021-2027. Moreover, the European Union is studying the prospects of allocating grant funds for the implementation of a mixed financing mechanism to combat the effects of the drying of the Aral.
Following the meeting, an agreement was reached on preparation of project documents by the GIDP on the basis of proposals from the Uzbek side to further work on attracting funding from the United Nations Green Climate Fund (GCF).
