Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan took part in the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) in Geneva from 20-22 March 2019, the press service of the Ministry of Investments and Investments and Foreign Trade said in a statement.
One of the main topics was the problem of the climate in Aral Sea region and the mobilization of financial and technical assistance resources to the Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Human Security for the Aral Sea Region (IFTP). In the light of this event, a separate press conference was also held at the Palais des Nations for journalists accredited to the UN office in Geneva with a presentation of the goals and objectives of the ITTF, its program and operational activities.
Moreover, the Uzbek delegation held a series of separate meetings with heads of UN agencies, in particular with the leadership of the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the UNEP Regional Office for Europe, the Department of Global Agenda of the Swedish Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Education and Finland’s cultural relations on comprehensive cooperation with the ITTF for the Aral Sea region, including co-financing projects.
Following the meeting, the parties came to an understanding on the need to enhance the creation of specialized structures and the appointment of responsible experts and representatives to support the activities of the Aral Sea Trust Fund. The question of signing the Administrative Agreement with the UN headquarters for WHO to join the ITTF Steering Committee was worked out previously. Moreover, members of the Uzbek delegation were invited to participate in a high-level seminar on trade facilitation in Geneva and an economic forum for participants of the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA) in Ashgabat. At the suggestion of European partners, a proposal will be considered to hold a regional conference on trade facilitation within the framework of SPECA in Tashkent in 2021.
In the continuation of the visit, the delegation visited Brussels, where a meeting was held with EU Special Representative for Central Asia Peter Burian, as well as with representatives of the European External Action Service, the European Investment Bank and the Belgian Foreign Ministry.
During the meetings, representatives of the EU and Belgium reported that the European Union and the Belgian side support the initiative of Uzbekistan and the United Nations to establish the Fund and are committed to establishing long-term cooperation in reducing the negative effects of the drying of the Aral Sea.
The EU delegation will visit the Aral Sea region in early April to study the needs of Uzbekistan and prepare recommendations for EU institutions and member states on opportunities for cooperation with the Uzbek side in this direction.
