Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 28 March 2019, the 14th round of Uzbek-Latvian political consultations was held in Tashkent.
The delegations of the parties were headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Dilshod Akhatov and Deputy State Secretary, Political Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Janis Mazeikis.
The parties discussed in detail the current state and prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation, including within the framework of the UN, in the format of the Uzbekistan-European Union, and also exchanged views on a number of international and regional issues.
As emphasized, today between the two countries there are no problems of a political, economic or other nature. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992, considerable experience has been accumulated in fruitful cooperation in various fields.
Mutual interest was expressed in deepening trade, economic and investment ties. Currently, Latvia is one of the key trade partners of Uzbekistan in the European Union. In 2018, mutual trade reached US$429.5 million, which is almost 50% more than the previous year.
The parties considered the possibility of diversifying mutual supplies by expanding the range of goods and services. In this context, holding the first meeting of the Uzbek-Latvian Business Cooperation Council in the city of Tashkent is recognized as relevant.
The deepening of cooperation in the field of tourism, culture, science, education and health is also considered promising.
In general, the sides exchanged views on the entire agenda of Uzbek-Latvian relations and identified priority areas for strengthening cooperation in the near future.
On the same day, the Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan, Ismatulla Irgashev, met with the Latvian delegation. The meeting exchanged views on cooperation in the framework of joint projects aimed at promoting the socio-economic revival of Afghanistan.
The Ambassador of Latvia, Mikhails Popkovs, took part in the negotiations.
