Norway to provide US$1.2m to UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 22 March 2019 on the margins of the UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in Geneva (Switzerland), a side event “Partnership for People: UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea Region in Uzbekistan”, initiated by the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the UN Office in Uzbekistan, will be organized with support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).
The representatives of a number of UN agencies, member-states' permanent missions to the UN in Geneva, diplomatic corps and other participants of the Forum are invited to take part in the event.
The main goal of the side-event is to introduce the key goals and objectives of the Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan (MPHSTF), recently established by the initiative of the Government of Uzbekistan and supported by UN, its programmatic and operational aspects and galvanize regional partnership in this context.
Last year the MPHSTF was officially launched on November 27 during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York. MPTFis one of the UN pooled financing mechanisms, which proved to be efficient in addressing environmental, socio-economic and humanitarian challenges worldwide in more than 50 countries.
The Trust Fund is aimed at creating a single platform for development of international cooperation and mobilization of donor community funds for practical implementation of integrated activities to improve the environmental and socio-economic situation in the Aral Sea region, as well as promoting joint efforts to achieve global Sustainable Development Goals. Besides, the Trust Fund supports introduction of new knowledge, innovative solutions and technologies to the Aral Sea region to ensure sustainable development of the region, promoted to be a “hub” for environmental innovations and technologies.
On January 8, 2019, the Presidential Resolution “On measures to support the activities of the UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan” was adopted, providing a number of practical measures on creation of enabling institutional, legal and financial environment to ensure effective operation of the MPHSTF.
To date, the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan has taken decision to make a contribution to the Trust Fund in the amount of US$6.5 mln., $2.0 mln. of which have already been transferred to the Trust Fund’s account in New York. The first tranche of the Government of Norway in the amount of about US$1.2 million is expected by the end of March 2019. In addition, Japan, the European Union, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and a number of other donor countries are expressing interest in participating in the activities of the MPHSTF.
