US to support Uzbekistan in implementation of educational projects

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 27 February 2019, a memorandum of understanding was signed in Tashkent between the Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan and the US Government on cooperation to support the education sector of Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan’s Minister of National Education Sherzod Shermatov and Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Ambassador Alice Wells and Deputy Assistant Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for Central and South Asia, Javier Piedra signed the document in Tashkent.
As part of the memorandum, the US Government will support the reform of the education sector in Uzbekistan.
In particular, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide advice to the Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan on such areas as strategic planning, resource mobilization, technical assistance to improve teaching methodology and curriculum development. The agency will share the best international experience in collecting and using data in the field of education.
USAID will support basement reading (EGRA) and mathematics (EGMA) skills assessment among primary school students in Uzbekistan, which will serve to develop curricula and teaching methodologies, as well as children’s analytical thinking.
In turn, the US State Department will support the Ministry of Public Education (MoPE) in creating school counseling services, developing new teaching standards and textbooks. The American side will also advise the ministry on school administration and management.
The MoPE and the State Department will cooperate in improving the teaching of English in the schools of Uzbekistan through the provision of trainings and resources for teachers and students.
One of the areas of cooperation will be sports. Within the framework of this area of cooperation, the parties intend to reduce violence in schools through the involvement of children in sports and extracurricular activities.
The American side will support the efforts of Uzbekistan in improving the teaching of STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) in schools of the republic.
Also, the United States will provide its support in the implementation of IT-nation and English speaking nation projects, which are aimed at improving students’ skills in the field of information technology and knowledge of the English language.
During the meeting, as part of the ceremony, Sherzod Shermatov and Ambassador Alice Wells discussed promising areas of educational cooperation between the two countries.
