KOICA and the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations hold the first Vocational Skills Competition

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On February 25, 2019 the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Uzbekistan Office and the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of the Republic of Uzbekistan held the final stage of the first Vocational Skills Competition in Uzbekistan. The competition was held in Samarkand Vocational Training Center, established with the grant-aid assistance of the Republic of Korea.
The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labor Relations Umurzakov B., Head of KOICA Uzbekistan Office Son Sung Il, Director of Keimyung College University Kim Yoon-Kap, Lee Jung Jun, LWC Company Representative and other high-level officials and guests.
Republic of Uzbekistan is making great efforts for the development of the vocational training system. The country is learning from the experience of other countries with the advanced system of vocational education and training. In this regard, the Republic of Korea has been supporting Uzbekistan through establishment of vocational training centers in Tashkent, Samarkand, Shahrisabz and very soon in Ferghana and Urgench. Through Korea Republic government’s grant-aid projects KOICA strives to contribute to the professional workforce development of Uzbekistan and promote job creation by sharing the know-how of Korean Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) models and development experience.
Deputy Minister Umurzakov B. stated that the skills competitions are important for increasing trainees’ vocational skills and qualifications. Skills create opportunities and connect societies. They are the foundation of economic progress. The goal of the competitions is to further increase the vocational skills of trainees of vocational training centers, to further strengthen cooperation and experiences sharing between them. In the future Uzbekistan plans to join WorldSkills Competitions association, which already has 80 members worldwide.
During the event, a tri-lateral MOU was signed between the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Uzbekistan Office and Keimyung College University of Korea for implementation of KOICA Public-Private Partnership project with the goal to strengthen cooperation in the field of human resources development in the region through the organization of a Business Incubator and training for start-ups. The project is planned to be carried out during 2019-2021.
In his speech, Director of KOICA Office Son Sung Il expressed his deep gratitude to the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations for their great attention and efforts in improvement of skills of young people, who are the foundation of the future of Uzbekistan. KOICA Office Director stated: “It is important that in the future these skills competitions are held regularly, the winners are placed in the leading companies, thus building a foundation for participating in international competitions”.
