Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 25 May 2018, the Minister of Foreign Trade of Uzbekistan Jamshid Khodjaev held talks with a delegation of the European Union headed by Eduards Stiprais.
According to the press service of the Ministry, the parties discussed a number of measures aimed at improving trade and economic relations between Uzbekistan and the EU countries.
One of the topics of discussion was the current issue of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO. Head of the Delegation of the European Union in Uzbekistan confirmed the intention to provide technical assistance to the republic in the process of accession to the WTO.
"We are grateful to the European Union for its readiness to bring the sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade, support measures in agriculture, intellectual property rights in the first place, in accordance with the WTO norms,” Khojayev said.
In turn, Eduards Stiprais confirmed the readiness of the EU assistance on this issue, namely creation of the necessary reserve of knowledge with involvement of experts and experts for consultations on the issues of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO. The head of the delegation also noted that the EU will assist in the process of developing the necessary documents, as well as in meeting the requirements in the field of non-tariff barriers.
The Minister proposed to establish close cooperation with the EU on the qualitative elaboration of the two conventions - the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity of 2000 and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants of 2001. These documents are among the 27 international conventions that need to be ratified for Uzbekistan to receive unilateral tariff preferences for the EU under the General System of Preferences plus (GSP +). The remaining 25 conventions have already been ratified.
Eduards Stiprais assured the Minister that specialists who were sent for consultations on questions of Uzbekistan’s accession to the WTO could also assist in the ratification of the above-mentioned conventions.
In addition, the European Union side expressed its readiness to assist Uzbekistan in the issues of the TRACECA transit corridor, as well as in promoting practical implementation by the EU countries of the Agreement on bilateral trade in textiles.
