The Ministry of Employment hosts meeting with IOM Director General

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 2 April, the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations of the Republic of Uzbekistan hosted a joint meeting with the participation of representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the IOM delegation led by IOM Director General Wesley Lacey Swing.
As part of the delegation, the regional IOM coordinator for the Central Asian region Dejan Kesserovich and the program officer for relations with Uzbekistan of the IOM Central Asia Coordination Office S.Toshbaev participated in the meeting.
At the meeting, an exchange of views took place on migration issues, the current contemporary challenges and ways to find legal mechanisms to reduce the risks caused by migration processes.
IOM General Director noted that the reforms carried out in the country under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev cause positive responses around the world.
During the meeting, issues of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the IOM on issues of assistance to migrants, development of legal mechanisms for regulating migration flows were discussed.
The Director General of IOM underlined that starting from 2016 in Uzbekistan joint projects are being implemented in the areas of combating human trafficking, combating extremism, etc.
At the meeting, the issue of Uzbekistan’s accession to the International Organization for Migration was discussed. It is noted that Uzbekistan, not being a member of this organization, takes an active part in projects initiated by the IOM. At the same time, joining the IOM will provide an opportunity for Uzbekistan to have a wide potential for closer cooperation with member states both at the multilateral level and on a bilateral basis.
IOM’s Director-General Swing was informed that a legal framework is being prepared for the subsequent application for membership in this authoritative organization.
Swing assured the Uzbek side that IOM will render all possible assistance in accepting Uzbekistan into the ranks of the organization. The meeting was held in a constructive and friendly atmosphere.
