Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Adaptation to climate change is a process that requires increasingly flexible and diversified approaches to the management system of natural resources and agricultural production.
At the same time, involvement of farmers an dehkans in adaptation activities and improvement of their knowledge on use of climate-proof technologies, which save resources, play an important role.
The United Nations Development Program, together with the Hydrometeorological Service Center under the Ministry for Emergency Situations and with the financial assistance of the Adaptation Fund of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, is implementing the project "Ensuring Climate Resilience of Farmers and Dehkan Farms located in Dry Areas of Uzbekistan", aimed at reducing and preventing negative consequences of climate change in the Republic of Karakalpakstan.
From 12 to 16 March, 2018, within the framework of this project seminars were held in Kanlykul, Muynak, Takhtakupyr, Chimbay and Kegeliy districts of Karakalpakstan on the theme: “Organization of interaction between local authorities and local communities with the aim of providing activities to implement adaptation measures at the landscape level”.
In recent years, the climatic factor has caused significant changes in the species composition of the pastures of Karakalpakstan, which has led to an increase in the amount of vegetation unsuitable for eating cattle, a decrease in the yield of phyto mass, deterioration of the condition and degradation of pastures.
The scale and intensity of such processes necessitates involvement of local communities for timely response and immediate measures to contain pasture degradation and restore their productivity. As it was noted during the first day of the seminar, increasing the role of local communities in the management of pastures, forests and meadows, increasing their knowledge of relevant best practices and their application will contribute to more efficient use of natural resources, as well as their conservation.
Continuous improvement of the legal and regulatory framework and the economic situation in the country create new opportunities for involving local people in pasture management, applying scientifically sound approaches adapted to the local conditions of the region.
Such experience has already been tested in Akhangaran district of Tashkent region, with which the seminar participants were acquainted. In the course of the event, participants got acquainted with the legislative foundations of cooperative pasture management, experience and best practices for involving local communities in the pasture management process, as well as practical implementation of the concept of cooperative pasture management.
The seminar was attended by representatives of rural gatherings of citizens, district hakimiyats, organizations and enterprises, heads of farm and dehkan farms, as well as journalists.
