Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of Uzbekistan, comprising Justice Minister Ruslanbek Davletov and director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov, met with Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Martin Chungong.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the first international organization founded in 1889 for political discussion. The IPU is the most authoritative institution of parliamentarians’ cooperation, created to promote peace ideas and coordinate the activities of the parliaments of states. Today it represents 173 states and 11 regional parliamentary assemblies, in particular, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the CIS.
M. Chungong welcomed the resumption of membership of Uzbekistan in the organization in 2017 after 10 year break. According to him, the republic will make a significant contribution to the further activities of the Union.
On behalf of the IPU Secretariat, he assured his readiness to provide all possible assistance in implementing measures to strengthen the role and capacity of the Parliament, especially in matters related to the improvement of the legal framework for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In this context, he highly appreciated the practice in our country of hearing reports by the Parliament of the executive authorities in the country, as well as reviewing and approving action plans for implementing international commitments and implementing treaties.
Interest in implementation of the Strategy of Action for the five priority development directions of the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2017-2021 was shown.
According to him, this positive experience of Uzbekistan fully meets the principles set forth in the second Global Parliamentary Report of the IPU, and it is very useful in terms of sharing experience between the parliaments of the world.
During the meeting concrete plans were discussed and agreements were reached on the participation of Uzbekistan in the forthcoming sessions of the Assembly and other IPU events, translation and publication of the Union’s basic documents in the Uzbek language, as well as preparing proposals on the main areas of cooperation with the Ministry of Railways and joint projects.
