Delegation of Smithsonian Institute to help develop tourism in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of the Smithsonian Institute (USA) will visit Uzbekistan from 7 to 15 January 2018, the press service of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.
The purpose of the visit is to study the cultural and civilizational heritage of the country and discuss implementation of the project on development of scientific tourism.
The US delegation will hold a number of meetings in the Ministries of Culture, Economy, Foreign Affairs, the State Committee for Tourism, the Association of Private Travel Agencies, museums and educational institutions of Uzbekistan.
It is planned to discuss the potential and prospects for further development of the tourism industry in Uzbekistan.
The project, financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), aims to conduct research in Tashkent and the city of Khiva, following which the Institute’s reports will be prepared with assessments and recommendations aimed at further development of tourism in these cities.
The Smithsonian Institution is a system of educational and research structure, and the museum complex is the world’s largest repository of exhibits, museum treasures and artifacts. The Institute includes 19 museums, 9 research centers, a zoo, and more than 200 institutions and museums in 45 US states, Puerto Rico and Panama, affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. Of these, 10 museums are located on the National Mall in Washington.
The Institute has close ties with museums and libraries in Uzbekistan. Since 2011, a number of visits of experts and researchers to Uzbekistan have been conducted, during which consultations and lectures on preservation and restoration of art, architecture and ancient manuscripts were held.
According to reports, there are more than 1,500 artifacts and artifacts associated with the cultural and civilizational heritage of Uzbekistan in the museums of the Smithsonian Institution. These objects are on a regular basis exhibited in the museums of Asian art of the institute.
