Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan intends to introduce personal identification cards (ID-cards) to replace passports. This is stipulated by the draft State Program for 2018 “Year of active entrepreneurship, innovative ideas and technologies”, which was published for public discussion.
The document said that a draft presidential decree will be prepared to simplify the procedure for the departure of citizens abroad by 20 April 2018.
National biometric passport of Uzbekistan will be used as passport for foreign travel. At the same time, Uzbekistan intends to introduce ID-cards instead of a passport for internal use.
From 1 January 2019, Uzbekistan planned to introduce biometric passports for traveling abroad and to cancel the procedure for issuing an authorization sticker for traveling abroad.
Earlier it was planned that current biometric passports would be used only as national passports.
