Uzbekistan and Russia to intensify cooperation in agriculture sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Alexander Tkachev paid a working visit to Uzbekistan on 23-25 September 2017.
On 25 September, the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation held talks with Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan - Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Zoir Mirzaev and Minister of Foreign Trade Elyor Ganiev.
During the meeting, the delegations of Uzbekistan and Russia discussed expansion of bilateral cooperation in the agro-industrial complex.
In 7 months of 2017, imports of agricultural products from Uzbekistan to Russia increased by 27% to US$75 million due to expansion of supplies of fruit and vegetable products. At the same time, the Russian Federation exported agricultural products to Uzbekistan for US$131 million.
Now, Uzbekistan and Russia are working on joint projects. In particular, the countries are creating a “green corridor” for bilateral deliveries of agricultural products and measures to improve phytosanitary control.
During the meeting, Alexander Tkachev noted that Uzbekistan is a promising export partner for Russian agricultural producers. He suggested setting up supplies of sugar from Russia to Uzbekistan. The Uzbek side expressed interest in buying Russian sugar.
The Russian side expressed interest in increasing supplies of oil and fat products, in particular sunflower and soybean oil, and seed potatoes, as well as grain, fish and fish products, meat (beef), and confectionery products to the Uzbek market.
The delegations of Uzbekistan and Russia supported the idea of expanding cooperation in the joint selection of cereals, legumes and oilseeds, including long-term integrated development of crop production.
The Russian side also proposed to create a joint Russian-Uzbek-Kyrgyz enterprise for cultivation of seed potatoes in Uzbekistan.
The sides noted readiness for comprehensive interaction of both countries, including development in the field of agrarian education and training of personnel.
They confirmed their interest in long-term cooperation on the further development of all areas of cooperation in the agricultural sector.
On 24 September, the Russian delegation visited a number of Uzbek enterprises. In particular, the Russian delegation visited the Agromir enterprise for processing of fruit and vegetable products and juice production, the Marokand horticulture farm, seed breeding and seed center, and also got acquainted with the activities of the cotton growing enterprise.
