Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 24 August 2017, over 50 representatives of the scientific organizations, relevant ministries and departments, whose activities are connected with the water sector, farmers and dehkan farms, water user associations of Karakalpakstan took part in the seminar, which was held in Nukus.
The meeting of experts was organized within the framework of the UN Development Program, the Adaptation Fund of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Government of Uzbekistan “Developing climate resilience of farming communities in the drought prone parts of Uzbekistan”.
The purpose of the seminar is to discuss functionality of the early drought warning system, developed for the lower reaches of Amudarya river and its output products.
The early warning system for droughts in the lower reaches of Amudarya will warn local community of Karakalpakstn on drought and low water, which will help to adaption to climate change.
During the seminar the issues of the functional capabilities of such a system were discussed and recommendations for practical use of its output results were given. At the same time, importance of their dissemination among the local communities of Karakalpakstan was emphasized.
In particular, emphasis was put on early introduction of new water conservation methods. The participants discussed issues related to increasing access to long-term forecasts of interested ministries and departments, as well as farmers, farmers and rural people.
Participants noted that this seminar is aimed at rendering all-round assistance to speedy introduction of modern methods of water conservation in dehkan and farm economies of the arid regions of Karakalpakstan as measures to adapt to climate change.
On the same day, an information and consultation center for farmers and dehkans was opened in Kanlykul district, where a set of necessary office equipment and thematic publications was handed over: a guide to technology of growing vegetables in soil greenhouses in the northern regions of Karakalpakstan, a manual on use of enriched glauconite sand as fertilizers in the agricultural sector, information on development of greenhouse and greenhouse facilities, etc.
In addition, the project envisages two instruments for measuring salinity and moisture reserves in the soil. Currently, four such centers operate in Karakalpakstan to provide information support to farmers and dehkans, promote innovative approaches to agriculture, share experience and knowledge, and provide practical services for use of advanced equipment and technologies.
