Uzbekistan approves new asylum procedures

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree to approve regulations on the procedure for granting political asylum.
The document said that Uzbekistan will grant asylum based on the universally recognised principles and norms of international law, as well constitution and laws of Uzbekistan.
Political asylum is granted to persons and members of their families who seek asylum and protection from harassment or a real threat to become a victim of persecution in their country of citizenship or permanent residence for public policy, religious beliefs, race or nationality, as well as other cases of human rights violations, which are stipulated by the norms of international law.
A person granted political asylum in Uzbekistan and members of his family enjoy rights and freedoms in the territory of the country, and also bear obligations established by the legislation or international treaties of Uzbekistan for foreign citizens and stateless persons permanently residing in the republic.
Political asylum is not granted if a person is prosecuted for acts that are recognized in Uzbekistan as a crime or are guilty of committing acts that are contrary to the fundamental purposes and principles of the United Nations.
Asylum will not be granted if the person is involved as a defendant in a criminal case or there is an accusatory verdict of the court entered into legal force and enforceable on the territory of Uzbekistan, if the person arrived from a third country where he was not threatened with harassment or if a person has the citizenship of a third country, where he is not prosecuted, etc.
Political asylum is granted by presidential decree and is lost according to the decree of the head of state. The maximum period for consideration of the application is a year.
In accordance with the decree, biometric databases of foreign citizens and stateless persons applying for political asylum in Uzbekistan will be created.
