Uzbekistan to resume cooperation with special rapporteur

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) preliminary reached agreement on resumption of cooperation with the special rapporteurs and work with the Regional office of OHCHR in Bishkek, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein said.
He noted that the breakthrough of the visit could be called a preliminary agreement with Uzbekistan on resumption of cooperation with special rapporteurs and to work with the Regional Office of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Bishkek.
Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein said that Uzbekistan reached progress in the human rights sphere despite the fact that OHCHR office is not working in the country.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, answering to question on possibility of opening of OHCHR office in Uzbekistan, said that cooperation will be established stage-by-stage. He said that the issue was discussed with the Uzbek President. He said that the sides will work on this issue from regional office in Bishkek. With such way, the sides will establish and strengthen cooperation, he added.
He expressed hope that during two day negotiations, the sides will reach agreement on further cooperation between OHCHR and Uzbekistan.
Zeid bin Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein called Uzbekistan to cooperate with other elements of the UN system on human rights, including Treaty bodies and special procedures.
The guest said that after 15-year break the Government resumed dialogue in this area and Uzbekistan invited the Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion.
UN High Commissioner noted successes in the field of human rights - for example, the elimination of child labor during the harvest of cotton. He said that the Strategy of Action would eliminate problems in other areas, in particular, torture, unlawful actions by the security forces, and the practice of compulsory collection of cotton by the population.
