European parliament backs textile protocol to EU-Uzbekistan agreement

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- European parliament backed plan to add a textiles protocol to the 1999 EU-Uzbekistan Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), the press service of the European parliament said.
The document is directed at decreasing duties for importing of textile products from Uzbekistan, which should easy trade of cotton and textile products between Uzbekistan and the EU.
European parliament noted that the decision was adopted as Uzbekistan implemented requirements of the European MPs to eradicate child labour at cotton harvesting.
MEPs welcome the fact that Uzbekistan has started to work with the International Labour Organization (ILO), pointing out that it has almost fully eradicated child labour in the past three years.
They nonetheless urge the authorities to step up a national awareness-raising campaign to wipe out the practice entirely and boost cooperation with the ILO.
