Uzbekistan, Russia sign agreement on development of military-technical cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Russian signed an agreement on development of military-technical cooperation and a plan of bilateral cooperation between defense bodies for 2017. The documents were signed in Moscow on 29 November 2016.
Minister of Defense of Uzbekistan Kabul Berdiev and Minister of Defense of Russia Sergei Shoigu signed the documents. The documents were signed in the result of negotiations between defense ministers of two states in Moscow.
During the talks, Sergei Shoigu expressed his assurance that Russia and Uzbekistan have perspectives and opportunities to expand military and military-technical cooperation to ensure security of two nations.
In his turn, Kabul Berdiev said that Russia is the main strategic partner of Uzbekistan. He said that many things link two states.
He noted that possibly, there were times when the cooperation between sides were not active, but cooperation with Russia were never interrupted.
He also expressed gratitude for resumption of training of the Uzbek officers and soldiers at the Russian military educational institutions, which were interrupted in 2012.
Berdiev said that number of joint events is increasing each year and Uzbekistan is happy for that. He noted that over 36 events will be organized in 2017, which will grow twice.
After the talks, Sergei Shoigu and Kabul Berdiev signed the agreement on development of military-technical cooperation and the plan of bilateral cooperation between defense bodies for 2017.
Russian minister said that these documents will solve issues related to equipment of the Armed Forces of Uzbekistan and improve their fighting efficiency. He said that the sides pay attention to boosting cooperation between defense bodies as well.
He said that the cooperation will be directed at ensuring military security of Russia and Uzbekistan, strengthening military potential of Armed Forces of two states, as well as training of military cadres.
Shoigu said that threats and challenges in the Central Asian region require to consolidate efforts on their neutralization. It is important to prevent entry of Islamic State and other terrorist organizations to our countries, he added.
He said that it is planned to realize a programme of modernization and re-equipment of Armed Forces of Uzbekistan with modern Russian military equipment till 2020.
