Uzbekistan supports accession of Pakistan to Ashgabat Agreement

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan supports intend of Pakistan to joint Ashgabat Agreement, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Rustam Azimov said at the first-ever United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference, which was held in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan).
Rustam Azimov said that modern conditions of practical implementation of Ashgabat agreement on creation of International transport corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman becomes important.
Azimov recalled that Ashgabat agreement was initiated by the leaders of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and signed in Ashgabat in April 2011.
First Vice-Premier of Uzbekistan underlined that during the UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference, Prime Minister of Pakistan Navaz Sharif announced intension of Pakistan to joint to his transport corridor.
Rustam Azimov stated that Uzbekistan supports this proposal (accession of Pakistan to Ashgabat Agreement).
Azimov said that existing transport corridors in northern directions remain demanded as they transport freight to Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine in direction of ports of Baltic and Black Sea, as well as direct transit to the European states.
As reported earlier, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov proposed to create transport corridor Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman-Qatar and other states of Persian Gulf in Ashgabat on 19 October 2010.
Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Oman and Qatar signed an agreement on creation of new international transport corridor, linking Central Asia with Persian Gulf, on 25 April 2011.
Foreign Ministers of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Oman and Qatar inked the document in Ashgabat, capital city of Turkmenistan. Later, Qatar decided not to participate in the project.
The new transport corridor will run from Uzbekistan across Turkmenistan and then to the Gulf via Iran, bypassing Afghanistan.
According to the Uzbek side, the establishment of railway road communication from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to southern ports of Iran will help to create important transport network among the countries of Persian and Oman Gulfs and all Central Asian states.
