International organizations issue US$1.1bn to Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- International organizations and international financial institutions issues over US$1.1 billion to Uzbekistan to implement 100 investment and grant projects in agriculture sector, the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov stated at the international conference "About main food programme implementation of reserves in Uzbekistan" on Friday, 6 June.
President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov said that Uzbekistan needs foreign investments, financial support of international financial institutions and banking structures to modernize and increase efficiency of agriculture sector, use existing reserves and opportunities to expand production of agriculture products, their assortment.
He said that Uzbekistan highly rates assistance of such institutes as International Fund for Agricultural Development, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, Global Ecologic Fund, Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and others, foreign state agencies, with help of which Uzbekistan implemented over 100 investment and grant projects and attracted over US$1.1 billion.
Uzbek leader expressed gratitude to allocated financial resources and practical assistance and cooperation in attracting advanced agri-industrial technologies, development and reconstruction of agriculture infrastructure, irrigation and land-reclamation system, etc.
Uzbek leader said that within the visit of the Director-General of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Jose Graziano da Silva Uzbekistan and FAO signed an agreement of cooperation and FAO opened its office in Uzbekistan. He expressed his satisfaction with constructive cooperation with International Fund for Agricultural Development of the UN, which is key financial institute of the UN in agriculture sector.
Uzbek President highly rated development of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), including in solving food security in the country. In agriculture sector, Uzbekistan and the ADB realized six projects for total sum of over US$400 million. He noted that one of important spheres of cooperation is projects on modernization of irrigation system.
He said that last year, Uzbekistan, ADB and Japan International Cooperation Agency started to implement a project on rehabilitation of rehabilitation of Amu Bukhara machine channel, within which reconstruction and modernization of irrigation system, which provides water to 315,000 hectares of land, where over 1.8 million people leave, will be conducted.
President said that World Bank is also expanding its participation in development of agriculture sector. Uzbekistan and the World Bank implemented eight projects for US$380 million and this year, the sides are planning to realize two projects with total loan sum of US$450 million, he added.
In Southern Karakalpakstan, the country will implement a large project on improving water resources management with the sum of preferential long-term loan for US$260 million, Islam Karimov said.
He said that within the project it is planned to rehabilitate 30,000 hectares of degraded lands with organization of highly diversified production of food cultures.
Uzbekistan and the World Bank are planning to implement a complex project on modernization of horticulture and vegetable-growing in seven regions of Uzbekistan. Within the project with total cost of US$200 million, the sides are planning modernize and develop scientific-research potential in seed-farming, selection and protection of plants, as well as open credit lines to farms and other small businesses to make investments into modern technologies.
He said that the UN Global Ecological Fund provided a grant for US$13 million to this project, which will be used to introduce advanced technologies in the farms and purchase new modern equipment.
Uzbekistan in cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank are implementing two projects with total loan for US$143 million to rehabilitate irrigation system of Khoream, Jizzakh and Syrdarya regions, as well as started to prepare a project on improving water resources management in Surkhandarya region.
