Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Currently, Uzbekistan annually produces about 16 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables, the President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov stated at the international conference "About main food programme implementation of reserves in Uzbekistan" on Friday, 6 June.
Islam Karimov said that currently Uzbekistan annually produces about 16 million tonnes of fruit and vegetables. He said that Uzbekistan produces about 300 kg of vegetables per capacity now, 75 kg of potatoes and 44 kg of grape, which exceeds optimal normal of consumption three times.
Uzbek leader noted that the cardinal reforms in agriculture sector during independence years, Uzbekistan increased production from 1 million tonnes to 7.8 million tonnes in last 22 years and the country started to export wheat.
Islam Karimov said earlier Uzbekistan imported 5 million tonnes of wheat to meet demand of population. Uzbekistan achieved wheat independence and started to export wheat to neighboring states.
Uzbek President said that the volume of production of agriculture products rose over twice and number of population grew by 10 million or 30%. He said that despite this, consumption of meat per capita rose by 1.3 times, milk and milk products – 1.6 times, potatoes – 1.7 times, vegetables – over 2 times, and fruits – almost 4 times.
President Islam Karimov stated that production of vegetables in price value, in US dollars, rose 7.7 times in 2004-2013, fruits and vegetables - 5.1, melons - 7.8, grapes - 8.7 times. He said that Uzbekistan forecasts that production of fruits and vegetables, grapes and melons will rise at least 2.3 times compared to 2014.
Uzbek leader said that the country exports food products, first of all fruits and vegetables, for about US$5 billion each year. He said that the exports of agriculture products rose by over three times in last three years.
Uzbekistan exports over 180 types of fresh and processed fruit and vegetable products to 80 countries. Uzbekistan is among top ten on exports of such products as apricots, plums, grapes, nuts, cabbage and some other fruits and vegetables.
Karimov said that implementation of food programmes helped to solve key tasks on providing full and balanced nutrition to Uzbekistan.
President said that improvement of structure and ratio of nutrition with other factors helped to improve health of population, first of all, children. He said that number of children with low weight fell twice (from 4% to 1.8%) in last ten years and their average height rose by 3 cm. Number of women with anemia fell 2.5 times, he said.
