Chinese firm to supply equipment to modernize power infrastructure

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- China’s Shanghai Electric and Uzbekistan’s Uzelektroapparat-Elektroshit will supply equipment for modernization of power infrastructure in southern-western Uzbekistan, according to the data of the World Bank, which finances the project.
State joint stock company Uzbekenergo signed a contract with these companies, which won the tender. The cost of the contract is US$35.88 million.
The companies will deliver necessary equipment for modernization of network infrastructure of the Southern-Western power region of Uzbekistan, which unites territories of Samarkand, Bukhara, Navoi and Kashkadarya regions.
World Bank and the Government of Uzbekistan signed an additional agreement in autumn 2013, in line with which Uzbekistan received US$48.2 million to modernize power equipment of the Southern-Western region.
The loan of the World Bank were restructured within the loan of International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD, part of the World Bank) at the size of US$110 million, which was issued to Uzbekistan in 2011 to construct high voltage power transmission line 500 kV “Talimarjan thermal power station – Sogdiana sub-station” in southern Uzbekistan. The line with the lengthof 218 km was constructed n summer of 2013.
During the project implementation, the World Bank resources were saved due to correct organization of procurement process.
