Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan considers the UN as the world’s most prestigious pacifist organization and supports its policy in this field, said an article published by the Khalq Sozi Uzbek newspaper on 27 February.
"Uzbekistan considers the UN as the world’s unique, most prestigious pacifist organization. Our country supports the UN’s policy in this field," the article by a political commentator, Qobilbek Karimbekov, said.
The commentator also said that Uzbekistan had so far made several proposals for reforming the UN and developing its activities. "In particular, at the UN General Assembly’s Millennium Summit in September 2000, it proposed expanding authority of the organization’s secretary-general and strengthening his capabilities," the article said. It said that the UN needed extensive reforms though it has been operating for almost 64 years now.
The article noted Uzbekistan’s important political and economic role in Central Asia. "That is why the UN pays special attention to Uzbekistan’s role in Central Asia and sees it as the guarantor of peace and stability in the region," it said.
