Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 21 November 2018, the Senate hosted a meeting of the Chairman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Nigmatilla Yuldoshev, with a delegation of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly headed by Chairman George Tsereteli.
During the meeting, the priorities of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly were discussed.
It was noted that in the modern world, parliamentary diplomacy is recognized as the most important resource for deepening mutual trust and the development of “public diplomacy”. Uzbekistan is currently engaged in constructive engagement with OSCE institutions, including the Parliamentary Assembly.
OSCE PA Chairman George Tsereteli noted that “Uzbekistan gained respect all over the world thanks to the democratic reforms implemented in recent years in the country. We are watching with interest as the legislative branch of power is being strengthened, and the powers of the chambers of the Oliy Majlis are being expanded. As is known, Uzbekistan has resumed its activity within the framework of the OSCE PA. This cooperation will undoubtedly benefit Uzbekistan.”
The sides stressed that the process of enhancing interaction between Uzbekistan and the OSCE opens up new possibilities for using the platform of the Parliamentary Assembly to establish and develop interaction with parliaments of other OSCE member countries, bringing to the world community the essence and significance of democratic reforms and transformations in socio-political and economic spheres.
Uzbekistan attaches great importance to mutually beneficial cooperation with the OSCE PA in terms of ensuring human rights and freedoms, the rule of law, combating transnational threats and security challenges, solving water and energy problems, as well as implementing trade, economic and investment projects.
It was underlined that interaction with the OSCE PA is aimed at implementation by the republic of the principles and commitments made within the Organization in all three dimensions, taking into account the new challenges and threats to security, the international agenda and the national interests of Uzbekistan. Fruitful contacts of the Oliy Majlis with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly are being held. Over the past two years, the parliamentarians of our country have actively participated in several sessions of the Assembly and a number of other events, and have been able to work closely together with experts from the OSCE PA.
During the meeting, the sides noted the progress made by Uzbekistan in ensuring human rights and freedoms, as well as the importance of holding the first Asian Forum on Human Rights on 22-23 November 2018 in Samarkand, which will be attended by members of the OSCE PA delegation.
The sides also exchanged views on topical aspects of international and regional policy, the implementation of agreements reached between Uzbekistan and the OSCE, including the Parliamentary Assembly, outlined the main directions of bilateral cooperation in the near future.
