Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Young people from different backgrounds participated in an event called ‘Youth Talks’ jointly organized by UNICEF and the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan.
Several organizations are coming together to join the campaign ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ from 25 November to 10 December. ‘Youth Talks’ provided a platform for young people to discuss their views about how gender based violence can be prevented and what everyone can do to end it.
Young people shared their opinions about gender based violence, and narrated their own experience as well as of their peers. Speakers underlined the negative impact of gender-based violence on girls and young women globally, and in Uzbekistan.
Participants included young speakers and international experts, leading to a rich discussion on the need to eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private spheres.
“Global studies have proven that violence against girls and women exists in all societies. Many people accept violence as inevitable. And, many incidents go unreported due to fear or shame”, said Sascha Graumann, Representative, UNICEF in Uzbekistan. He also added that “Despite recent progress in many countries, the availability of comparable data on violence against children remains limited, hindering the ability of most countries to achieve the sustainable Development Goals.”
Representatives of Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan also attended the event. They reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to protect girls and women from domestic violence.
