Uzbek delegation attends the session of the IAEA General Conference

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan led by President of the Academy of Sciences Bekhzod Yuldashev is attending the 62nd session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is held on 17-21 September 2018, in Vienna (Austria).
On the first day of the plenary session, President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan Bekhzod Yuldashev delivered a national report. In his speech, he noted the importance of cooperation with the IAEA, including on implementation of projects within the framework of technical assistance.
Since the establishment of cooperation with the IAEA, the 25th anniversary of which will be celebrated in 2019, Uzbekistan, together with the IAEA, carried out many activities on improving the radiation and nuclear safety of the country and region, on the initiative of Uzbekistan, an Agreement was signed on a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia.
The Uzbek side informed participants of the General Conference on signing of an intergovernmental agreement between Uzbekistan and Russia on 7 September 2018 in Moscow on cooperation in construction of the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan, as well as on beginning of relevant work in this direction, preparation of development program of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and personnel for industry.
Head of the delegation on behalf of the Republic of Uzbekistan assured that the project will be implemented in strict accordance with the IAEA recommendations and compliance with international norms and rules in this sphere, as well as expressed hope for mutually beneficial cooperation and support of the IAEA to Uzbekistan in this direction.
In accordance with the intergovernmental agreement, it is planned to build in Uzbekistan the first nuclear power plant of two blocks of “3+” generation with water-water energetic reactor WWER-1200 with a total capacity of 2.4 GW according to Russian technologies. Currently, the survey work on selection of NPP location site has started. The project will be implemented jointly with Rosatom State Corporation using the latest technological solutions and strict compliance with all safety standards.
According to the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Austria, during the period of participation at the 62nd session of the IAEA General Conference, Uzbekistan delegation will hold negotiations with IAEA leadership and representatives of other countries and companies on cooperation issues in the field of using atomic energy for peaceful purposes.`
