A breakthrough year in history of bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Talks between the delegations of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan began in an expanded format. The main attention is paid to development of trade and economic cooperation, the press service of the President of Uzbekistan said.
A free trade regime has been established between our countries. Since 2002, the Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation has been operating.
The co-chairs of the commission are the Prime Ministers of the two countries, which demonstrates the importance attached by the parties to the partnership in this area.
2018 was a breakthrough in the history of bilateral relations. Since the beginning of this year, more than 50 meetings have taken place at various levels. Four meetings of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation were held.
In the first half of this year, the volume of mutual trade increased by more than 35 percent compared to the same period of 2017. Trade agreements and agreements worth over US$$300 million have been concluded.
“There are a lot of unused opportunities in our cooperation. Continuing work at this rate, we will soon bring the volume of trade to US$500 million. In fact, our potential is at least US$1 billion,” President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.
The intergovernmental commission on trade and economic partnership is entrusted to consistently continue work on building up mutual trade and diversifying its structure. The need to take joint measures to expand cooperation between business structures and border regions of the two countries was noted.
Agreements have been reached to accelerate the implementation of projects for the assembly of agricultural machinery, the production of building materials, food products, finished textile, electrical products and other goods.
Mutually beneficial agreements have been reached in the fields of transport and transit, energy, water use. Issues of countering terrorism, extremism, transnational crime, enhancing the effectiveness of law enforcement cooperation were discussed.
The parties reaffirmed their interest in the further development of bilateral cooperation.
