Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Agriculture is one of the key branches of the economy of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The land used for agricultural production occupies 45% of the country’s territory. This was reported at a meeting of a single site of investment proposals involving foreign and local investors, which was held by the State Investment Committee of Uzbekistan.
Together with water and forestry, the industry provides employment to 3.6 million people, or 27% of the employed in the economy and 18% of GDP.
Export of agricultural products brings about 20-25% of total export revenues of Uzbekistan.
For 20 years the volume of agricultural production has grown 3 times, amounting to 24 million tonnes of fruits and vegetables, of which 11.3 million tonnes are vegetables, 3.1 million tonnes - fruit, 1.7 million tonnes - grapes and 2.1 million tonnes - melons. In addition, Uzbekistan has more than 12 million head of cattle, more than 20 million heads of small-bred cattle, about 72 million birds. The country produces more than 2.4 million tonnes of meat, more than 10 million tonnes of milk, 37,000 tonnes of wool and more than 7 billion eggs.
Investments in agriculture solve a number of key tasks of the country’s economic development: stimulating general economic growth, ensuring welfare and promoting public health, and maintaining food security.
The Ministry of Agriculture attracts investments in three directions: attraction of investments under the government guarantee, foreign direct investments, attraction of means of gratuitous technical assistance (grants).
Currently, Uzbekistan carries out six projects under government guarantee for a total of US$1.2 billion. The World Bank finances projects “Development of Fruit and Vegetable Sector in the Republic of Uzbekistan” with additional funding totaling US$500 million, “Development livestock sector in the Republic of Uzbekistan” with a total amount of US$150 million and “Program for adaptation to climate change and mitigation of its consequences for the Aral Sea basin”.
