Uzbekistan creates Agency for Development of Atomic Energy

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Agency for Development of Nuclear Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers is being created in Uzbekistan.
On 19 July 2018, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree “On measures to develop nuclear energy in the Republic of Uzbekistan”.
The document was adopted to meet the growing needs of the population and the country’s economy in electric power, as well as to ensure sustainable energy supply by increasing generating capacities, diversifying the energy sector, peaceful use of nuclear energy, and introducing innovative innovative technologies in this area.
According to the document, the Uzatom Agency is the body of state administration, responsible for the development and implementation of a unified state policy and strategic directions in the sphere of development and use of nuclear energy.
The Agency is a part of the Cabinet of Ministers’ complex on geology, fuel and energy complex, chemical, petrochemical and metallurgical industries.
The new structure is financed from the state budget of the Republic of Uzbekistan and other sources, not prohibited by law.
The Uzatom will prepare proposals on priority directions of state policy in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, including the development of regulatory and legal acts.
The agency will draft and implement state programs for development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan and attract investments, including foreign ones, for the implementation of projects in the field of nuclear energy.
Uzatom will conclude agreements and contracts for the design, construction and operation of nuclear power facilities with the introduction of modern technologies and equipment that meet the international requirements for industrial and environmental safety.
The agency will also develop and implement comprehensive measures to develop nuclear science and nuclear technologies, projects of fundamental research, research and development, experimental and innovative works, and introduce advanced technologies.
Among the tasks of the agency is the improvement of the system of radiation and nuclear safety of the republic’s facilities, together with the development of an action plan in conjunction with other ministries and departments to prevent nuclear accidents and radiation emergencies.
The Agency was charged with ensuring the non-proliferation of nuclear materials and technologies, radioactive materials, implementation of measures for physical protection and ensuring nuclear and radiation safety.
The President instructed to draft a law on the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes, the draft Concept for development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan for 2019-2029, as well as the portfolio of investment projects for development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan and the draft state program for development of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan for 2019-2029.
