President of Uzbekistan and World Bank President discuss promising areas of cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim in New York on 20 September.
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted during the meeting that the World Bank is a reliable and strategic partner of Uzbekistan.
Uzbek leader briefed the head of the World Bank about ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan. In particular, it was noted that the Concept of Administrative Reform was adopted in Uzbekistan, systematic work is being done to reduce the state’s participation in the economy and fight against corruption.
It was also noted that Uzbekistan introduces market mechanisms in the monetary sphere and takes measures to remove barriers to trade.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that Uzbekistan is a supporter of further development of cooperation with the World Bank. He noted that the great experience of the World Bank is of great importance in the implementation of reforms in Uzbekistan.
In the course of the meeting, the sides discussed issues on implementation in Uzbekistan of an effective system of microfinance, modernization of irrigation and drainage and road infrastructure, development of the agro-industrial complex and other spheres.
The President of the World Bank noted that the measures, taken in Uzbekistan to improve the banking and financial system, further improve favorable business environment and investment climate will serve to develop business.
The parties considered specific proposals on further expansion of mutual cooperation, promising projects in this direction.
As a result of the meeting, Uzbekistan and the World Bank signed documents on financial and technical cooperation for a total of about US$ 500 million.
It should be noted that currently the World Bank takes part in implementation of projects on the modernization of the energy, irrigation and municipal sectors, the development of transport and social infrastructure, and the processing of agricultural products.
In 2016, Uzbekistan and the World Bank adopted a joint program of cooperation until 2020. Within the framework of the program, 27 projects will be implemented with a total cost of US$4 billion. The World Bank will provide financial resources for US$3 billion to implement these projects.
